Program Overview
The Babaamizi Gikinoo’amaadiwin Program is a learning initiative designed to support cultural competency, reconciliation education, and community understanding between Indigenous communities and the broader business community in London, Ontario.
The program provides opportunities for businesses, organizations, and community members to learn about Indigenous histories, contemporary realities, and pathways toward meaningful relationships grounded in respect and understanding.
Why the Program Exists
Many people within the broader community want to support reconciliation but often feel uncertain about where to begin. There are still widespread gaps in understanding related to Indigenous history, treaties, residential schools, and the ongoing experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
The Babaamizi Gikinoo’amaadiwin Program was created to provide accessible learning opportunities that help demystify Indigenous communities and encourage informed, respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members.
What Participants Can Expect
Participants in the program may explore topics such as:
• Indigenous histories within the London and surrounding region
• Treaties and the promises made between Indigenous nations and Canada
• Residential schools and their ongoing impacts
• The meaning of reconciliation in everyday life
• National Indigenous Peoples Day and Truth and Reconciliation Day
• Understanding land acknowledgements and their purpose
• Building respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities
Community Impact
Programs that support reconciliation education and cultural competency help build stronger communities. By increasing understanding and awareness, the Babaamizi Gikinoo’amaadiwin Program encourages respectful relationships between Indigenous peoples and the broader community.
These conversations contribute to a more informed community where businesses, organizations, and residents can engage more meaningfully with Indigenous neighbours and partners.
Looking Forward
As IFHR continues to grow, the Babaamizi Gikinoo’amaadiwin Program will develop in collaboration with community members, Elders, educators, and local organizations. The program will continue to create opportunities for dialogue, learning, and relationship-building within the London community.
