The beginning
The story of the Indigenous Fellowship of Hamilton Road began through community conversations and a shared recognition that Indigenous people living in the Hamilton Road neighbourhood would benefit from a welcoming space where culture, learning, and community relationships could grow.
Many Indigenous community members living in urban environments seek opportunities to reconnect with culture, build relationships, and create spaces where Indigenous knowledge and community support can be shared openly.
These early conversations laid the foundation for what would eventually become the Indigenous Fellowship of Hamilton Road.
The Medicine Garden
One of the first initiatives connected to this vision was the development of the Mushkiki Gitigan Medicine Garden, which began in 2018.
The garden was created as a space where Indigenous youth, families, and community members could learn about traditional medicines, environmental stewardship, and cultural teachings connected to the land.
Over time, the garden grew into an important gathering space where community members could share knowledge, strengthen relationships, and reconnect with land-based learning.
The continued success and community interest in the garden demonstrated the need for broader opportunities for cultural programming and community engagement.
Growing Community Vision
As the Medicine Garden developed, conversations within the community continued to grow around the idea of creating a broader Indigenous-led community space within the Hamilton Road neighbourhood.
Community members identified the need for programs that support youth, community gatherings, cultural learning opportunities, and spaces where Indigenous people could connect with one another and strengthen relationships within the community.
These conversations ultimately led to the formation of the Indigenous Fellowship of Hamilton Road.
Looking ahead
Today, IFHR continues to build on the foundation created through the Medicine Garden and community engagement.
The organization is working toward developing a community hub that supports youth programming, cultural learning, community gatherings, and initiatives that strengthen relationships within the Hamilton Road neighbourhood.
As IFHR continues to grow, the organization remains committed to creating welcoming spaces where community members can gather, learn, and support one another.
A Story Still Being Written
The story of IFHR is still unfolding.
As new programs develop, partnerships grow, and community members become involved, the organization will continue to evolve alongside the needs and aspirations of the community it serves.
